Kuan Yin Temple (Guan Yin) in the Chinese Gardens at Bendigo was the first Buddhist temple built to honour the Goddess of Mercy in Australia. Kuan Yin is the most popular goddess associated with Buddhism in China and many Asian countries today. She is worshipped as the protector of families and the household, especially women and children.

The Chinese immigrants referred to the Australian gold fields as 'Xin Jin Shan', or the 'New Gold Mountain'.[link]
